Morning Sadhana with Helen Arpin

“What is sadhana? It’s a committed prayer. It is something which you want to do, have to do, and which is being done by you. … Sadhana is self-enrichment. It is not something which is done to please somebody or to gain something. Sadhana is a personal process in which you bring out your best.”

~Yogi Bhajan

Sadhana means daily spiritual practice. It is three things: a commitment, a discipline and a devotion. It is a commitment to the Higher Self: It is a discipline to the mind and its a devotion to the Creator, who created you. All serious forms of self-discovery will include Sadhana within their teachings because it deals with the very thing that keeps us from liberation, the ego. It is a method to achieve self-victory. Sadhana is a deep cleansing process from this lifetime and many more that have gone before. It is a very powerful clearing of the subconscious, which pushes and pulls at us. To be in happiness and joy we must tackle the purification within that aspect of us.

How the class is structured for Morning Sadhana:

When you arrive the lights will be low with lite candles.  Sign the attendance list, cost is Free or a Donation if you wish.  Yoga mats, pillows and blankets are available at the studio but feel free to bring your own.  Bring a water bottle.

The sadhana starts with japi, a 15 minute meditation, then we will tune in with the Adi Mantra, followed by breathing exercises a few warm up exercises then a 45 minute Kriya (yoga exercises).

After that we will do 7 meditations, 5 of the meditations are 7 minutes long, one is 22 minutes long and the last one is 5 minutes.  I have hand outs of the mantra meditation words that you can use to follow along if you wish.  We close the class with the Long Time Sun Song after which I invite you to stay for some refreshment.

If you’re worried about not being able to sit for an hour of meditation feel free to lay down and relax anytime you need.  The fact that you got up for sadhana is amazing and shows your commitment to a healthier more spiritual lifestyle and remember that the benefits will greatly out way the discomfort of getting up early.  Most people report that after sadhana they feel more alive, refreshed and have a ton of energy all day long.

*Below are the 7 mantra for Morning Sadhana know also as Aquarian Sadhana and the meaning.  Information from

Yogi Bhajan gave us the Aquarian Sadhana in 1992 to take us through the transition into the Aquarian Age. This sadhana prepares our psyches to excel in the new environments and coming decades.

The Aquarian Sadhana attunes your gunas, your chakras, and your mind to the change of the Age. We will need intuition, stamina, both physical and mental, self-awareness, and a new depth of spiritual experience that can hold our identity in the face of global changes, relentless competition, information overload, and ecological and environmental challenges.

The Aquarian Sadhana is practiced by Kundalini Yoga communities across the world. Doing sadhana in a group develops group consciousness. A group sadhana practice amplifies the impact of the meditation. Yogi Bhajan said that group meditation not only adds to individual effort, but multiplies it.

Sadhana can be done as a group or individually. The ideal is to join in a group practice AND cultivate your individual practice as well.

Yogi Bhajan on Sadhana

Why do We Get Up for Morning Sadhana?

Wisdom, Commitment, Consistency

Why do we get up for morning sadhana? Because we have to face the whole day, and we cannot face the day without a constant level of energy. People love you for three things only: wisdom, commitment, and consistency.

Wisdom is the intuitive nature that allows you to give the right answer by listening within the question that is asked. For every question there is an answer in it.

Commitment is the ability for your whole self to sustain its status in projected reality of action. Then people can trust you. Otherwise, it is like building a cozy
bungalow on the top of a volcano. If you act like an earthquake or volcano, who will build upon you?

Consistency is steadiness through time. Sadhana gives us sensitivity to know, to
feel, and to touch. It gives us intuition to touch reality. The methods are three-fold: jappa, tappa, sanjam. Jappa is repetition. Tappa is the heat of central impulsation. Sanjam is merger through simran—meditation on a very slow, conscious breath.

In your consciousness, you must find a time to ask yourself three questions:

  1. “How much am I a part of the I which made me what I am?”
  2. “During my working day, during my existence, during my awareness, how much of the time have I been aware that I am part of the greatness that I am?”
  3. “What can I do to extend myself to the greater I AM of which I am a part?”

In finding the answers to these questions, you will find your way from the realm of finite ego to the realm of higher consciousness, and you will have the experience of total relaxation into mental happiness and contentment.

Group Sadhana

All for One, and One for All

Your body is the temple of God, and your soul is the Divine Guru within. So, you get up in the morning, meditate, chant the mantras, do the exercises, call on your spirit, regulate the breath, and you get together in group consciousness. In that way you help each other. Group consciousness in morning sadhana is to help each other. If I am trying to sleep, another is not sleeping. If, in this whole group, one person opens up to God just once, we will all be blessed in his openness. That is what matters.

If one has walked into sadhana with heart and soul in a prayerful mind, we will all benefit. That is the power of the group sadhana.

Namaste and hope to see you.
